Ray Bourque decides to retire after winning his first Stanley Cup in 2001. An incredible career of 22 seasons in the NHL and setting all time defensemen records that still stand today.

Alexander Ovechkin is selected by the Washington Capitals with the first overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Bobby Hull, "the Golden Jet", signs with the WHA to the Winnipeg Jets in 1972 for a record contract, starting the NHL-WHA rivalry.

Montreal Canadiens make a trade with the Boston Bruins in 1964 to obtain the rights to 16 year-old amateur goaltender Ken Dryden, and history begins.

In 1994, The Toronto Maple Leafs make a landmark trade with the Quebec Nordiques(Goodbye Wendel!), and acquire 23-year-old Center Mats Sundin, the highest-scoring player in franchise history with 987 points!
